Menorca Sol Gavilanes Hotel Review, Minorca

The Sol Gavilanes Hotel, Menorca is a four star hotel situated in a beautiful, quiet location overlooking the beach in Cala Galdana, Menorca. It's a popular holiday hotel with 346 rooms including two bedroom family rooms, junior suites and a full suite.

All rooms in this Menorca holiday hotel have full en-suite bathroom, hairdryer, mini-bar, satellite TV, air conditioning, ceiling fan, in room safe, direct dial telephone and outdoor terrace. The hotel has room service and has three restaurant areas. The family restaurant is non-smoking air conditioned restaurant with great views over the Cala Galdana beach and bay. There is also a terrace restaurant (smoking permitted) where buffet food is served and an à la Carte restaurant for fine dining.

First Impressions

Having stayed in the town of Son Bou, a popular Minorca holiday destination, the first thing that hit us staying at the Sol Gavilanes Hotel in Cala Galdana was that it had a slightly older clientele, with far fewer children staying at the hotel. Many people were retired couples so the atmosphere was much quieter and we felt the Sol Gavilanes Hotel would be a good choice for a relaxing Menorca holiday.

The hotel's fantastic location in an elevated position overlooking Minorca's beautiful Cala Galdana bay was one of its strong points and made it an ideal base for a relaxing Menorca holiday. Click here to see the view from the hotel's main restaurant.

Accommodation and Room Facilities

The Sol Gavilanes Hotel, Cala Galdana, Minorca has comfortable guest accommodations with quality room furnishings and fittings. There were two single beds in our family room and another large king size bed in the adjoining family bedroom.

In short, the rooms in the Sol Gavilanes Hotel, Menorca were tastefully furnished and up to the standard expected in a four star holiday hotel.

The Television in this Menorca holiday hotel provided BBC World, MSNBC and Eurosport in English. There was no Sky News available which was disappointing, as BBC World became tedious very quickly!

Cleanliness

The Sol Gavilanes Hotel Menorca's main areas and rooms were spotlessly clean throughout. We also felt that, compared to other Mediterranean countries, cleanliness standards of hotels and restaurants in Menorca were high making it a good holiday destination choice.

Food Quality and Variety

The buffet style food at the Sol Gavilanes Hotel, Menorca was quite disappointing. Both the quality and variety of evening dinner buffet foods were somewhat lacking considering the hotel is a four star Minorca holiday hotel. Many guests also spoke of their disappointment with the hotel's food.

Swimming Pools and Sundeck

This Cala Galdana, Minorca hotel backs straight onto the Menorca's pleasant Cala Galdana beach (which can be reached by the hotel's lifts). Despite this, the pool deck areas were surprisingly busy and it was difficult to get seating at times. For a Menorca holiday hotel of this capacity, the main pool was rather small and there weren't many sun beds. There was a small children's pool at the property and a separate much larger adult pool and sun deck area.

Location & Resort Quality

Cala Galdana has to be one of the nicest small resorts on the island of Menorca. There are a fine selection of restaurants in Cala Galdana (although only a few of these suit fine dining clientele). Cala Galdana has a great beach which is in one of the most sheltered and attractive coves on Minorca. The beach at Cala Galdana offers sheltered bathing conditions and is a popular holiday destination for English holidaymakers.

Hotel Facilities

Gymnasium

The Sol Gavilanes Hotel, Menorca had a small fitness room with an assortment of equipment including a multi-gym and exercise bike.

Internet Cafe

In the Sol Gavilanes hotel's reception, in common with many other Menorca hotels,  there was an Internet Café which was inexpensive and proved useful during our stay.

More Facilities

The hotel has a gift shop, reading rooms a bridge room, billiards room and video games. Menorca's Cala Galdana beach has water skiing, windsurfing, sailing and boating. There is also a diving school nearby and this area of Minorca is popular for its diving opportunities. The nearest Menorca golf course is 23km away.

Staff Helpfulness and Attitude

All staff at the Sol Gavilanes Hotel, Menorca seemed very friendly and helpful. They always seemed to have time for us.

Adult and Children's Entertainment

This popular Menorca holiday hotel has daily dances and shows for adults and a children's entertainment programme. Since these aspects of the hotel's services weren't seen or used during our stay we can't personally rate them.
